About the data

MPI provides this data to help market participants understand New Zealand Unit (NZU) supply in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). We update the data every second week.

This data doesn't include forest registered in the permanent forest sink initiative (PFSI).

Data may change

The number of post-1989 forestry participants required to submit a MER may change as MPI works to resolve compliance matters relating to:

  • transmissions of interest – when forest land or rights are transferred to someone else
  • the outcome of reviews of forest eligibility.

Delay between processing and transfer/notice issue

The number of units to be transferred or surrendered is based on MPI processing of MERs. There can be a small delay between processing and the Environmental Protection Authority's transfer of NZUs or issue of surrender/repayment notices through the New Zealand Emissions Trading Register.
